Gared - 40 year vet of the Night's Watch
Will - 4th year vet of the Night's Watch - killed

Important Characters:

Notes:

Gared thinks they should head back, Ser Waymar disagrees
They were sent to track wildlings
Wildlings - free folk north of the Wall
Called the Others by the people of Westeros/the White Walkers by the wildlings
Night's Watch - man the Wall, protect Westeros from wildlings and the Others
The Wall - 700 foot Wall of ice that is the northern border of Westeros
Mallister (Tully bannermen)
"It made the trees rustle like living things. All day Will had felt as though something were watching him, something cold and implacable that loved him not."
The bodies of the wildlings Will saw are now gone
Will climbs a tree and sees the Others attack Ser Waymar
Waymar attacks, but is easily killed
When Will climbs down Ser Waymar rises with blue eyes and strangles him

So that is the prologue. A great start to the book, but very different from what is to come. I have heard people who recommend new readers to skip the prologue, because it is much more "fantasy" than the rest of the book. I would not recommend that. I think it is an awesome opening, and it is interesting to keep this chapter in mind as you read the rest of the book.

Next up...BRAN I
